Data deletion

Last updated — 2026-04-08

You can delete your Acarta account and the personal data we hold about you at any time. This page explains exactly how, how long it takes, and what happens to backups. Acarta is operated by Väder AB, Stockholm, Sweden, under GDPR.

  1. § 01

    Delete from inside the app

    The fastest way to delete your account is from inside the Acarta mobile app:

    • Open the Acarta app on iPhone or Android.
    • Tap your profile in the bottom-right corner.
    • Tap the Settings icon (top-right).
    • Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account.
    • Confirm the deletion when prompted.

    Your account, profile, check-ins, photos, lists, comments, and reactions will be removed from the live database and our CDN immediately, and the remaining copies in encrypted backups will be overwritten on the regular backup rotation within 30 days.

  2. § 02

    Delete by email

    If you no longer have access to the app, you can request deletion by email. Send a message to hello@acarta.app with the subject line "Delete my account" from the email address associated with your account. We will verify your identity, delete the data within 30 days, and confirm by email when it's done.

    If you cannot send from the email address on the account (for example, because you lost access to it), include any other identifying information that lets us confirm the account is yours — for example the sign-in provider you used, the rough date you joined, and some of the places you checked in at.

  3. § 03

    What gets deleted

    When we process a deletion request we remove:

    • your profile (email, display name, avatar, bio);
    • your check-ins, notes, and photo attachments;
    • photos you uploaded to place galleries;
    • your lists, folders, and bookmarks;
    • your follow graph (who you followed and who followed you);
    • your comments and reactions;
    • your sign-in provider link (Apple or Google);
    • your subscription state in RevenueCat.

    We also remove the corresponding records from Cloudflare R2 (photos and media) and Neon (relational data).

  4. § 04

    What stays

    A few things are retained for a limited period or permanently, as allowed or required by law:

    • Platform contributions. Content you contributed to the shared knowledge base — such as place descriptions, building information edits, translations, and edit history — remains part of the platform but is anonymized (your name and user reference are removed). These contributions are treated as part of the collective dataset, similar to a wiki.
    • Anonymized check-ins. Your check-in records are anonymized (the link to your account is removed) rather than deleted outright, so that aggregate place statistics remain accurate.
    • Encrypted backups. Deleted data may remain in encrypted backups for a short rolling window; those backups are overwritten on the normal rotation schedule, typically within 30 days.
    • Technical and security logs. Access logs (IP, user agent, path, timestamp) are retained for a rolling period of up to 30 days for abuse prevention, then deleted.
    • Billing records. Invoices and payment records that we are required to keep under Swedish accounting law are retained for the period required by law (normally seven years after the end of the financial year). These records are kept with our payment processors (Apple, Google, RevenueCat) rather than in our own database.
  5. § 05

    What is not deleted

    Deleting your Acarta account does not delete:

    • Your subscription with Apple or Google. If you had an active subscription, cancel it from your Apple ID or Google Play account settings. Acarta cannot cancel it on your behalf, because the contract is between you and the store.
    • Content you posted outside Acarta. If you shared a check-in to another service (for example Instagram), deleting your Acarta account will not remove that post from the other service. You need to delete it there.
    • Reference data. Place facts and images that are part of the shared dataset are not tied to your account. Deleting your account does not remove or modify them.
  6. § 06

    Response time

    Under GDPR we will complete the deletion of your personal data within 30 days of a valid request. In most cases we will do it much sooner than that. We will confirm by email when it is done.

    If we cannot locate an account from the information you provided, or if we need additional information to verify your identity, we will reply within that 30-day window to ask for what we need.

  7. § 07
